Proposing in Niagara Falls Canada in the Winter

February 23rd, 2026

It's a completely different experience to propose at the Falls in Niagara Falls in the winter then it is in the summer. The crowds are significantly less and the Falls look very different.

A lot of couples visit Niagara Falls all year round looking to propose while on vacation. There is honestly no more beautiful a backdrop that our soaring water falls. Your experience will be one you never forget and your photographs will take you back to that life changing moment every time you look at them. There are definitely some things to consider when coming to Niagara Falls in the winter time.

The absolute plus side is that there are less tourists. While Niagara is a hot spot for tourists year round, the winter will definitely give you more privacy when proposing at the Falls. The hotels are cheaper, there are no lines at attractions (not all attractions are open in the winter time) and the air bnb's are plenty.

The downside, it's cold. If you are coming from a northern climate you will fit in just fine but if you are visiting from the south, be prepared for some frigid temperatures.

The Falls themselves and the parks around them are very different in the winter. Often times the Falls have significant ice build up around them (this is a unique and cool look in my opinion) and the area around the Falls are often covered in ice from the mist and the freezing temperatures.

As much as I don't like winter and cold weather, I actually love winter photography. The aesthetic feels a little more like art to me.

Some of the parks around the falls are not maintained so if there is significant snow it's a little trickier to trek through the area. The sidewalks along the Falls are maintained so you are still able to take a knee and ask that all important question.

If the temps get too chilly we have a backup plan! Propose at the Falls and then we will head inside for some cozy engagement photos. Don't worry though, we will still be sure to get a lot of great photos outdoors as we head in. I will maximize every moment we have outside.

Winter can make for some beautiful pictures and if you are from the south your photos will be extra special!
